Moisture on the walls is a headache that can bring us very serious problems if we do not tackle it in time. One of the main consequences of humidity is the wear it causes to the paint, the wall itself, and even the foundation. The degradation of these elements endangers the very structure of the home where it appears, with the consequent danger for its inhabitants. Additionally, the loss of quality of life due to ugly walls, musty smell, and flaking, and the health problems originated from the appearance of mites and the promotion of allergies. That is why it becomes fundamental to know the different causes that originate it and thus, to be able to work on getting rid of it.

Remember that Alvarenga Construction provides our services in the following cities: West Hartford, Windsor, Glastonbury, Bolton, Avon, Columbia, Hartford, and East Hartford {service(drywall-connecticut)}

Types of humidity

Condensation Humidity

It derives mainly from the ambient humidity and the thermal difference between the interior (warm) and the exterior (cold). In addition, the simple human presence generates water. Three people generate up to 12 liters of ambient humidity per day.

To give you an idea, look at these examples of moisture emission per hour: a washing machine generates 300 grams, a person at rest 30 grams, performing a light activity is 60 grams, cooking 1000 grams, or taking a shower 2600 gr.

Thus, we usually think that the source of the problem is a water leak, but there are many more causes that can trigger humidity problems and condensation in your home. To control this type of humidity, it is important to air the rooms, hang wet clothes outside and avoid very long baths (the main cause of humidity in poorly ventilated bathrooms). Likewise, there are various products and artifacts that help to dry the excess like Silicate gel and other hygroscopic materials, or even electric dehumidifiers.

Filtration Humidity

In homes that are not well waterproofed, moisture appears through bricks or tiles. It can also be caused by a broken pipe. We can detect it when you start seeing drops on the ceiling, black spots, or mold that appears in the corners.

If the home structures are waterproof, we should not expect surprises, but if they appear, they must be addressed as soon as possible. They never resolve on their own, but rather get worse over time.

It is recommended to waterproof the structures with some type of membrane or bituminous paint (Bituminous paint is a type of bituminous coating product that provides weatherproofing and corrosion resistance to the surfaces where it is applied).

Capillary humidity

Capillarity takes place when water enters the subsoil of the house. This humidity rises little by little until it reaches walls. Old houses, poorly insulated or built with permeable and porous materials on humid terrain are especially susceptible to problems of humidity by capillarity. Poorly insulated houses built on areas with nearby water tables are also very susceptible.

Flood Moisture

This is produced by climatic phenomena or broken water pipes inside the home or neighboring homes. It requires quick action to prevent water from entering the interior of the walls and floors, thus creating a problem that will persist over time.

Humidity

It is the relative humidity of the environment, mainly in coastal areas or tropical climates. Although it does not affect the home per se, it collaborates with other factors to deteriorate surfaces and structures more quickly. In general, the most recurrent wall humidity types are capillarity and filtration.

Although there are materials that moderate the problem, it is essential to discover the cause and attack it before it is too late. In the case of humidity by capillarity, there are two possibilities to eliminate or attenuate the effect it causes. One is to waterproof the wall with product injection treatments and the other is the placement of anti-humidity plates.

The anti-humidity plates have been gaining acceptance in the market as a quite practical solution, as well as aesthetic. In turn, there are various anti-humidity paints that help to maintain aesthetics while the problem persists. These paints have chemicals that can help reduce fungus growth. In many ways, humidity can be prevented. In others, we just have to act quickly and correct the problem that causes it.
